Ocarinas in School

Can Can, Offenbach

Yellow Bird in 2 parts

The children playing the Can Can are an unselected class of 6 and 7 year olds in a UK Infant School. They’ve been playing the Can Can for just a few weeks. Notice the concentration as they play the tricky downward scale. The teacher accompanying them on guitar is not a music specialist. Ocarina lessons are her favourite teaching time of the week.

Yellow Bird is rhythmically complex, chromatic and ideally suited to English Ocarinas. These 10 and 11 year old children are also ‘mixed ability’ and have played through Books 1, 2 and 3 to reach this stage of performance. They have a repertoire of 80 or more pieces.
