Ocarina Reviews

When the BBC asked us to direct them to an ocarina-playing school in 1995, we couldn't have guessed that this would result in over 100 Edinburgh children playing ocarinas on prime time national television. Even more amazing was the scriptwriting of this little lad who echoed what most children say, that 'Ocarinas are Great!'

Did you know about ocarinas? (19 November 1995)

Our ocarina work in schools has been noted several times in recent years in research documents and Government publications. We met the Minister responsible for school music on 28th January 2009 at the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Imagine our surprise on hearing that, earlier that day, the Minister for Education, Ed Balls, had waved one of our ocarinas around in the House of Commons as a response to interest expressed and questions raised by MPs as to 'what is an ocarina'.

Ocarina in Parliament (28 January 2009)

In response to new initiatives for Whole-Class music teaching, an ITN film crew visited two Kent Primary schools in November 2008 to see what was going on with ocarinas in the classroom. As you'll see, there were plenty of interesting comments from children and teachers. The children really had been playing for only a month or two and were not specially selected, so please be amazed at what they have achieved… on any other instrument they would probably still be learning their first two or three notes at this stage!
