David Liggins taught music in Leicester schools from 1976 to 1979, using guitar and tin whistle as class instrument alternatives to recorder. In 1979, he bought a one-way ticket to South America and spent 11 months exploring the Andes and busking on his silver flute to earn the fare home. His interest in ocarinas was awakened by seeing large numbers of beautifully made precolumbian vessel flutes in museums. Such flutes, often labelled 'ocarinas', were little known or understood and seemed to have been lost to modern culture.

By 1983, David had discovered new types of pendant ocarina whilst hiking long-distance footpaths across England. He sought out two makers, John Langley and Terry Riley and, within months, had published his first music books for them. Now David could return to the classroom, this time with ocarinas!

Christa Liggins taught German in Kettering schools from 1985 to 1989. After their marriage, Christa joined David to work full-time with ocarinas in a rapidly growing business. Together they published new ranges of music books and developed methods for playing ocarinas with children, including their own! From the beginning, David and Christa have worked closely with the best ocarina makers to find the best tunings, fingerings and designs in order to present their current range. It remains a joy to them both to share the successes and the insights of teachers around the world who together are developing the educational use of these relatively new musical instruments.
